How to sketch illustrations on your iPad

Don't have a photo for your next blog post? no problem. You can use your iPad to sketch an illustration.

I use Sketch Book Express for iPad, which is free. The app lets me choose pens, paintbrushes and air brushes. First I sketch the outline of the image using a thin black paintbrush. This gives the image structure and tells the basic story.

Then I fill in the sketch with airbrush color. The airbrush is nice because it starts out with a light color, then as I pass over an area a few times the color darkens. This gives me control of shadows and highlights.

When I'm finished I save the illustration and then export it to the photo library.
