I was laid-off... now what?

First: Celebrate! I mean it. You are now a free bird. This is the opportunity to take a step ahead. (You were underpaid anyway and it certainly wasn't your dream job.)

Second be polite and ask for everything. Ask for a recommendation letter, ask for a severance package, ask for job search assistance, ask to extend your healthcare policy, ask...ask...ask. Now is the time to have the courage to stand up for yourself and ask for help. Some of the answers will be 'no', but 'no' is a good word, learn to be comfortable with it.

Clean up your LinkedIn profile. Put on a nice shirt and have a friend take a professional looking head shot. Use this new photo on all your job search profiles.

Inventory your skills and accomplishments. Take a little time to scribble down all the talents you have and all the projects you have completed. Refer to this list when you setup your online profiles.

Take some time to search with Indeed Trends (http://www.indeed.com/jobtrends). Do a little dreaming and see what skills are in demand right now. When you write your resume, highlight any trending skills you have.

Be positive... or at least only post positive things. A negative profile will turn off would be employers. Clean up your recent Facebook and twitter posts. If you don't have something positive to share you can always post famous quotes.

This is an opportunity to take a new path. You have learned much since you were last hired. Discover your true talents and make them shine.
