You are selling yourself short

Everyone is in marketing. We all have an audience and we need to convince our audience to adopt our plan or use our abilities. Every job interview is really a sales call. A job candidate shows up to the office selling her abilities. Even after being hired the selling continues. Every promotion is another sale of your newly acquired talents. The sales call never stops.

It is important to understand the needs and desires of the people you are selling to. What does your boss want? How can your promotion help him achieve his goals? To be clear I did not say, “how can you help him achieve his goals?”, I did say, “how can your promotion help him achieve his goals?” The distinction is very important and also the source of frustration for many corporate employees.

There isn't a clear path that will work in every situation. Selling is the art of listening and solving someones problem with your solution. Always be listening, ask lots of questions and connect the dots to how your promotion can solve problems. Listen well and you will become indispensable.

Listen. Plan. Act.
